Last November residents voted on a $748 million dollar bond for Katy ISD. Though there were cries that all the district wanted was a new stadium, new plans show otherwise. Most of this money will be allocated to new schools, repairing the older campuses north of Interstate ten, and new equipment for schools that need it.
One major change is already coming to fruition. At a November, 17th board of trustees meeting the district’s architect and planner, Peter McElwain, revealed plans for six new schools. Four of these schools have already been bid out by PBK Architects and VLK Architects, with two other schools still being bid on. Trustees got a closer look at plans and locations for the new schools and the budget for their construction.
New Katy ISD High School
The first plan revealed was for the newest high school. Recently there have been new schools popping up all over the south side of Katy: Thompkins HS, named after the beloved Mayde Creek principal O.D. Thompkins, and Seven Lakes. The newest school will be located at the intersection of Stockdick Road and Peek. This will be Katy’s eighth high school in the district.
Money to build this school will be allocated from the bond just passed in November, 2014 and a previous bond passed in 2010. $151,982,680 will be pulled from the recent bond and the rest will be taken from the previous bond. The grand total for the construction of this Katy school will be a whopping $157,270,340.
New Katy ISD Junior High
The plans for the district’s fifteenth junior high, including the junior high still being bid on, were also revealed at the November, 17th meeting. The Junior high will be located adjacent to the new high school being built. Both schools are being planned by PBK Architects.
The budget for this newest Katy school will be a total of $44,916,485. With money being pulled from both bonds to fund the state of the art junior high. Both the junior high and high school will begin building soon. Doors of both campuses are expected to open to students by the beginning of the 2017 school year.
Two New Katy ISD Elementary Schools
Along with the two big schools the plans for two elementary schools were revealed as well. These are obviously smaller campuses and will be less expensive than the larger ones. The 38th elementary school, also known as Cinco Northwest, will be located off of Horizon Bluff and Westridge Ln. The total cost of the 38th school will be $29,020,570.
The 39th Katy ISD elementary school is being called Ventana for now and will be located off of East Ventana Parkway. This elementary school will be located southwest of the new junior high and high school on Stockdick Rd. The total cost of this school will be $28,354,330.
