Katy ISD Could Grow to 105,000 Students

Recently the Population and Survey Analysts reported their annual demographics to the board of trustees at Katy ISD. The report suggested that the districts’ growth rate will be 4.3 percent a year. This is an enrollment increase by about 2,400 students a year to around 3,100.

This is an enrollment increase by about 2,400 students a year to around 3,100.

    The officials with Population and Survey Analysts predict that in five years the district will grow to 84,000 students. The projected enrollment for 2024 is going to be an impressive 105,000. The recently passed bond will aid in this growth tremendously. Katy ISD is already adding schools to keep up with the growing demand.

    Population and Survey Analysts gathered an immense amount of data to come up with these seemingly overwhelming numbers. The data included job growth, transportation improvements, birth rate in the city, as well as home and apartment construction.

    The apartment growth was one of the biggest factors in this project number of student enrollment. Apartment living in Katy is getting more luxurious than in most other areas. Luxury apartments can be found all over the area south of Interstate 10. PASA is expecting Katy to have nearly 3,300 apartments by next October. The impressive number of apartments will bring more students into Katy schools.

    Katy ISD Kindergarten Growth

    The district’s kindergarten growth was a major contributing factor for the estimated ten year rapid enrollment growth in the areas best district. Enrollment of Katy kindergarteners increased 8.4 percent this year. This is the highest jump at this grade level since the 10.4 percent increase in 2005. Even though this is the highest leap in enrollment in almost ten years, the rate has grown for the last two years.

    Kindergarten growth is a large indicator in the growth of a district as a whole. No other grade level can predict the expected size of a district as well as the kindergarten class. Since the rate of enrollment in this grade level has steadily grown in the last three years, officials expect to see it to continue to grow as the rest of the city expands.
